Subsequent to receiving a BA in Sociology from UCLA in 1972, where my focus of study was ethnomethodology (the methods by which people define their social reality), I worked extensively in the information systems field -- initially as a research assistant at the UCLA School of Public Health where I contributed to the development of online information retrieval systems in the areas of mental health and social policy evaluation, then with System Development Corporation where I provided systems analysis, customer service, technical writing, marketing communication and training development support for a world-wide network of scientific information databases.
I began my external consulting practice in 1982 doing instructional design for technical training programs for companies including Xerox Corporation, Prudential Insurance, First Interstate Bank, and Southern California Gas Company.
In 1987/88 I was on the consulting team that developed the systems selling process and related skills training program for Xerox Corporation. At this time my work began to focus on developing role-focused performance management and strategic skill development programs for a wide-range of business, government and nonprofit clients.
In the early 1990's I began to work with clients in the area of conflict resolution and diversity management. Between 1993-1996 I was a member of an internal organizational development cadre within the Internal Revenue Service working on strategic change management and cross-functional team initiatives.
My work again shifted with the publication of a series of guidebooks, The Inner Work of Work, (Berrett-Koehler, 2000), which continues to be the focus and direction of my consulting, training and coaching practice.
During my career I have followed a self-directed professional development path through my involvement with institutions including UCLA Extension, the Center for Collaborative Management, the Dispute Resolution Center, the National Conference for Community and Justice, the Center for Dialogic Communication, the Esalen Institute, and the Process Work Center and professional organizations including ASTD, ISPI, PCMA and the ODNET.
